there isn't any ideal size, but you both need to have small enough in which they can not get their beaks in, or big enough to allow them to get them out. I am employing one" x 1" currently and it works Alright. The more compact sizes of wire can lead to some birds breaking the guidelines of their beaks off, though a dimension of say, one" x 2" will
